Mortarboard musings

  • Dominican College volleyball standouts Michelle Fiorvanti of Commack and Jordyn Fuller of Keller, TX, selected to the first team, and Whitney Ranger of Ventura, CA, named second-team, earned all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) accolades.
  • Senior guard and tri-captain Ryan Sheridan of Blauvelt, a one-time standout at Tappan Zee High, had four points and a steal as the No. 24-ranked Oswego State (9-1) men’s basketball team dominated the second half for an 83-55 non-conference win over Cazenovia (3-7). The Lakers return to action on Jan. 3 with a trip to Edinburg, TX, to meet Division I Texas Pan-American.
  • Mercy College junior wing Jessica Biggs of Nanuet had 10 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots in an 87-66 loss to Felician College in women’s basketball. The Mavericks travel to Philadelphia on Dec. 30 to challenge Chestnut Hill College (1-9) at 4 p.m.
  • Albertus Magnus alumna Felicia DaCruz, a freshman guard, is slowly breaking into the lineup on the Fairfield University women’s basketball team. The Stags (7-3) take a four-game winning streak into action on Dec. 29 when they travel to No. 2 University of Connecticut at 7:30 p.m. Fairfield opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play and the New Year on Jan. 2 when it hosts Iona College at 7 p.m. at Alumni Hall. 
  • Junior Alaina Walker of Pomona, who starred at Albertus Magnus, scored 11 points to help the red-hot St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team lift its record to 11-1 after beating Colgate 68-49. Walker, a defensive specialist, helped the Bonnies hold Colgate to just 10 points over the final 13 minutes.
    The victory gave the Bonnies their sixth road victory of the season to become the only team in the nation with a 6-0 road mark. St. Bonaventure next takes to the court against Villanova on Dec. 29 at the Monmouth University Hawks Holiday Classic. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m., and the Bonnies will face either Norfolk State or host Monmouth on the tournament’s final day, Dec. 30. The Bonnies have already defeated a program-best three BCS schools (St. John’s, West Virginia, Indiana), and will get a shot at a fourth against the Villanova Wildcats.
  • Freshman Rachel McNair of Valley Cottage and the women’s basketball   team at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, raised its record to 7-3 with a 58-55 victory over visiting George Washington. The Patriots travel to Ohio University on Dec. 29 for a 7 p.m. tilt at the Convocation Center in Athens.
