While the high school and college sports seasons are just about finished, that doesn’t mean local sports come to a stop. There are still plenty of sports leagues still going, and a bunch that will keep going or start up over the summer.

Here at the Daily Sports Digest, we want to hear about all of those sports. The Daily Sports Digest isn’t just for school athletics.

College Sports

Senior safety Sam Goldman of West Harrison has been named a captain on the Union College football team.

Also serving as captain for Coach John Audino will be senior fullback Tim Hersey of Buffalo, senior offensive lineman Elias Damouni of Fort Lee, NJ, and senior linebacker Noah Joseph of Chevy Chase, MD.

“I am extremely excited about this group as our prime leadership vehicle for our football team moving forward into the 2012 football season,” Audino was quoted on the Dutchmen’s website. “It is a great group of young men and a seasoned group of players who have great experience on the field as well as great leadership skills as people. I am sure that they will provide our team with great leadership throughout the season.”

About Goldman, the Coach had this to say: “Sam started for us the last half of the season and was a very good player for us in the secondary. He knows how to play the game and has contributed to the program in many ways both on and off the field.”

Union, which went 6-4 last year, opens the 2012 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Salve Regina University of Newport, RI, at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady.

Goldman, a graduate of Harrison High, had one interception and two kickoff returns for 30 yards in eight games last year. He also had 14 tackles for Union College, which lost its opener at Salve Regina last season, 25-22.

Joining Goldman on the team will be freshman quarterback Connor Eck of Rye, making teammates of former fierce rivals in the storied Harrison-Rye annual gridiron showdown.
