As you may have noticed ESPN has been in the midst of their annual “Jimmy V Week” for cancer research. Jim Valvano is one of New York’s own and he has ties to the Hudson Valley as he coached at Iona College for five seasons.

In 1993 Valvano succumbed to cancer and passed away at the age of 47, but in death he inspired ESPN to create the V Foundation in which 100% of every penny earned goes right into cancer research.

Throughout the week ESPN will be running several stories of off court battles of sports figures such as Homer Drew, George Karl and Merril Hodge. ESPN will also hold the “Jimmy V Classic” next week at Madison Square Garden where Missouri, Villanova, Washington and Marquette will square off. Tickets are still available for the event.

Cancer has undoubtedly touched my life and Jimmy V’s ESPY speech still rings in my ears daily. It is the season of giving so I urge everyone to share their stories and dig deep into hearts and their pockets to help fight this disease.

Valvano’s words put it best in his speech:

“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”
