Nanuet’s lacrosse team fell at Byram Hills Saturday 17-0.

Jack Horan led the way for Byram Hills with six goals and Jake Kaiser and Jeremy Neporent each scored twice in the win.

Joey Sweet had ten saves for Nanuet in the loss.

Game: Albertus Magnus vs. Highland

Score: Highland Won 6-1

Highlights: Sam Mazzella scored three goals and assisted on two others for Highland in the win. Liam Condon scored once in the loss.

Sport: Girls Lacrosse

Game: Byram Hills vs. Albertus Magnus

Score: Byram Hills Won 16-12

Highlights: Katie Byrne led the way with four goals and an assist as Alex Fritz and Claudia Hammerschmidt scored three times in the win for Byram Hills. Albertus Magnus’s Casey Slivestri could not be stopped as she led the Falcons with seven goals.

College Sports Notebook:

The Rockland Community College golf team, which is the defending Region XV champion and currently leads the Mid-Hudson Conference standings, will be in Kingston today at 1 p.m. for a conference tournament hosted by Ulster CC at Wiltwyck Country Club.

Head coach Tom “T-bone” Craffey of Garnerville, in his sixth year at the helm and again assisted by the veteran, battle-tested, highly regarded Howie Pierson of West Nyack, is expecting the Hawks to make a serious challenge for the region title, and make another trip to the national tournament.

But there’s a ‘but’ in there.

“We’re stronger (than last year), but the region is stronger, too,” Craffey warns. “Nassau has won seven national titles and has 25,000 students – they got to find some good golfers in there! Suffolk is solid, too; they have a kid, well, a man, 27 years old, coming back from Afghanistan and another kid, a man, 26 … a soccer player from Ireland who also plays golf. Even Dutchess has a couple of good kids.”

Rockland CC has four players back from last year’s regional championship squad--which had an off-day and placed 11th at the national tournament—led by Colby Lewis of Monroe, a top-ranking linksman in the Mid-Hudson Conference and, says Craffey, almost a sure shot to qualify for the national tournament.

Also returning are North Rockland HS graduate Dan Gizzi, who is coming off a 74 at Dunwoodie in Yonkers, Albertus Magnus alum Terrance Michalak, and Andrew Lunau of Highlands Mills, who carded a hole-in-one at the national championship last year at Chateauguay Golf Club just outside Buffalo. Chateauguay GC is also hosting this year’s nationals in June.

The Mid-Hudson Conference championship, which sends the winning team to nationals, will again be contested at Philip J. Rotella Memorial Golf Course in Haverstraw, where Superintendent Cal Foxx continues to draw raves.

“He’s done an unbelievable job with that course,” offers Craffey, easily admitting that having the home-course advantage is an asset and might help offset whatever edge the stronger conference rivals might offer when the championship finals are contested May 10-11.

“It will be a shootout,” Craffey said. “Rotella is a screwy course. You really have to know it, so it should be an advantage to us.”

Rounding out the team is Mike Cavanagh of Garnerville, Sean Murray of Stony Point, John Schifano of Monroe and Christian Fico, also of Monroe.

“We’ve got eight guys battling for six spots, which is great, and something we’ve never really had,” Craffey concluded.

Mortarboard musings

• Sophomore Kelly Harris of Yorktown Heights has started 13 games on defense for the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team (7-7), which visits Smith College (7-6) in Northampton, MA, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Junior Jen Califano of Suffern also mans a defensive position for the Pride, and has appeared in nine games, starting four.
• Former Tappan Zee HS two-sport standout Ryan O’Rourke, a freshman at Springfield College, has made six appearances on the Pride’s baseball team, with three starts. O’Rourke is a catcher who is also utilized in the outfield. Springfield (14-12) meets Nichols College (6-14) in Dudley, MA, on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Freshman outfielder Brett Jackson of Larchmont, a Mamaroneck High alum, is batting .294 for Nichols in nine appearances, including five starting assignments.
• Kevin McQuade of Mamaroneck had three hits for the Purchase College baseball team in the second game of a twin-bill swept by The College of Mount Saint Vincent, 8-4, 9-1. The Panthers (11-10) visit Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT, on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. McQuade is batting .329, third-best on the team, and has driven in 16 runs, second only to senior Frank Fiumara of Port Chester, who has 18 RBI.
