Nanuet softball defended home field as the Golden Knights beat Sleepy Hollow 14-3. Katie Celardito pitched a complete game and stuck out nine in the win. Nanuet’s Danielle DiModugno went 4-5 with five RBI in the win and Kelly Slayvaugh hit a double and a triple for the Knights.

Highlights: Lauren Capello picked up her second win on the year as she struck out nine in seven innings of work. Tara Condon went 2-4 2ith a home run and two runs scored.

Highlights: Matt Bosco led the Pirates with four goals and Chris McGarry picked up three as the Pirates got out to a 7-1 first half lead and never looked back. Matt Ceblissis and Tim Kelly each scored for the Falcons.

Mets memories are made of this

Bud Harrelson, the former Mets shortstop, coach and manager, was in championship form Monday night, patiently signing copies of his book “Turning Two,” at Books and Greetings at Northvale (NJ) Plaza.

Harrelson, who owns the Long Island Ducks after serving one year as the team’s manager, was joined by the prolific author Phil Pepe of Englewood, NJ, and also eagerly answered questions from an interested crowd of Mets fans.

“I’ve been a Mets fan almost forever; I went to games on the IRT No. 7 when I lived in Queens, even before 1969,” said diehard follower Liz Vitacco of New City.

Former volunteer firefighter William Hicks of Piermont, standing in a long line of book buyers, said he’s been a fan of the Metsies for “almost as long as I’ve been alive.”

Harrelson, the only pro baseball player to have been born on D-Day (June 6, 1944), discussed many topics in the game, emphasizing that baseball is a much tougher game than anyone realizes, and that the mental aspect separates the men from the boys.

Derrel McKinley – he was called ‘Bubba’ by his older brother Dwayne, which morphed to Buddy, hence Bud—was asked about the current-day Mets.

“They’re going in the right direction—bring the kids up and let them play,” Buddy said.

District 20’s Noah Strone of Harrison was selected out of a field of 14,000 to call this year’s little league regional softball championships in Bristol Connecticut. The can be found on Harrison Patch. 

College Sports Notebook:

Rehain scores game-winner

The Manhattan College women’s lacrosse team overcame a six-goal deficit to overtake Niagara University, 15-12, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale.

Sophomore attack Kelsey Rehain of Suffern had five points, including the game-winning goal with 1:03 remaining in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest.

Attack Chrissy Gutenberger of Stony Point brought the Jaspers within one with 2:38 remaining, and then, after the Jaspers won the ensuing draw, Caitlin Hynes of Mahopac drove down, drew a foul, and scored the game-tying goal on her free position attempt with 1:47 to go.

The Jaspers (4-9, 2-3 MAAC) earned another free position attempt at the 1:08 mark, but instead of shooting, Manhattan used the opportunity to set up a play. After a scramble in front of the net, Rehain ended up with the ball, and she put it in the back of the net to put the Jaspers ahead for the first time, 15-14, with 1:03 left to play.

“We were really trying to drive,” Rehain said on the Manhattan website. “They were putting a lot of pressure on the attack, so I thought it was great how we moved it around and had some cuts through the middle. I just saw it and went. I faked the goalie out.”

Midfielder Elizabeth Dugan of Stony Point contributed four draw controls for the Jaspers, who conclude their home schedule on Wednesday night against one of the teams they trail in the standings—Iona (8-6, 2-2 MAAC).

Prior to the 7 p.m. contest, seniors Dugan, Gutenberger, BrieAnna Spatarella of Rocky Point and Breana Leonard of Bay Shore will be honored.

Chiarella Makes the Most of Opportunity

Michael Chiarella spent his career at Harrison High School as a member of three teams as he was a varsity athlete in football, basketball and baseball.

Now Chiarella is playing two sports for Drew University. During basketball season Chiarella battled injuries and received playing time scarcely but he did get in five of the team’s games as a freshman. Baseball season has been much kinder to the freshman as he is making the most of his limited opportunities. 

In a 14-6 victory at Juniata earlier this month, Chiarella got the opportunity to pinch hit and play second base for the Rangers and he made it count. In his three at bats Chiarella picked up two hits and two RBI in the team’s win.

Chiarella’s play has already earned him some more playing time. Over the weekend Drew took on Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference double-header and in both games the Rangers came from behind to beat their opponent by a run, the team won game one 5-4 and game two 7-6.

In the first game of the double-dip Chiarella came up in the bottom of the sixth inning as a pinch hitter and lined a single into right field that scored the game tying run on the hit, and the go-ahead run on the outfielder’s error.

In the second game Chiarella started at second and went 1-3 with a double, two RBI and scored a run.

Currently the second basemen is hitting .235 in 17 at bats with two runs and five RBI on the season. Drew will be back in action tomorrow as they head to Mahwah New Jersey to take on Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m.

Mortarboard Musings:

• Mike Abelard of Spring Valley scored 18 points as the St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s track and field team placed sixth at the Rider Invitational. The Spartans, leading all Division II competitors, were also helped by George Erazo of North Babylon, who scored 10 points with a runner-up finish in the 400 and a seventh in the 200. Abelard won the 100, and was second in the 200. The women finished 11th, with Keeley Bateman of Pearl River setting a personal best in the 1,500 in 4:59.16.
• The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team defeated Cincinnati, 13-10, on Senior Day at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ.  The Scarlet Knights (9-5, 4-2) were paced in scoring by sophomore midfielder Lauren Sbrilli of Martinsville, NJ, with her fourth hat trick of the season. Senior Ali Steinberg of Suffern, who leads the team with 43 points, was held in relative check, with three assists. Rutgers returns on action on Friday, visiting Loyola in Baltimore, MD, at 7 p.m.
• Award season has come early this year for the Manhattanville Valiants as three of the school’s elite athletes were named player of the week in their respective sports. Casandra Honovich was recognized as the Freedom Conference’s Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, junior Nick Sica was named the Freedom Conference’s Golfer of the Week, and Dean Tahir was named Freedom Conference Tennis Player of the Week.
