The Top Spot:

Nanuet beat Valhalla 6-4 in eight innings and Katie Vellardito pitched all eight innings with two strikeouts. Jamie Iseman, Janine Mackey and Laura Marinello each scored twice in the win.

Daniele Maffei was 2-3 with one home run, two runs and an RBI in the loss.

In baseball, Clarkstown North heads to Nanuet at 3 p.m.

In softball, Our Lady of Lourdes heads to Albertus Magnus at 4:30 p.m.

 

College Sports Notebook:

Dominican College charges forward

The Dominican College softball team improved to 22-12 and stayed undefeated at 16-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play after sweeping Goldey-Beacom College at the Jackson Athletic Complex in Wilmington, DE.

The Chargers, who won the opener 11-1 and the second game, 10-1, host Concordia College today with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

 Delaney Childers of Johnstown, OH, raised her record to 13-6 in the first game, limiting Goldey-Beacom to one run on six hits and four strikeouts.

Brielle Kerscher of Staten Island, Julie Plante of Swansea, MA, and Deidre Jeppson of Sylmar, CA, supplied the offensive punch.

Plante and Jeppson each had two hits in the second game behind Katrina Pistilli of Staten Island, who allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts to improve to 7-6 on the season.

 

Keep on truckin’

The winless Dominican College men’s lacrosse team, which is hopeful of bouncing back from a 19-4 East Coast Conference loss to No. 3 Dowling College, hosts Roberts Wesleyan College in a non-conference game today at the Chargers field in Orangeburg.

Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Dowling (6-1 overall and in conference play) fell behind early as Connor Lawlor of Neptune City, NJ, netted his third goal of the season with about 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

From there, Dowling took command until the eight-minute mark of the final quarter when sophomore Thomas Dertinger of Nanuet scored three unanswered goals. Dertinger added an assist to lead Dominican while Lawlor also added an assist.

Junior goalie Andrew Slater of Brookfield, CT, made 11 saves in the loss.

 

Mortarboard musings

  • The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team, which has won six of its last seven games to lift its record to 7-4, continues a two-game road swing on Saturday against No. 2 Syracuse at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 13-5 win at Villanova (2-8) with help from Ali Steinberg of Suffern, who had one goal and three assists.
  • Iona College’s Mike Glover has been invited to the Portsmouth Invitational beginning today. The tournament gives professional scouts another opportunity to look at college players.
  • Meghan Richards of Nanuet, a freshman infielder, has two RBI for the Nyack College softball team, which has a doubleheader scheduled today at 3 p.m. against Felician (NJ) College at the South Orangetown Little League Complex in Orangeburg. The Warriors visit the University of The Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
  • Manhattanville picked up a walk off win 5-4 against Staten Island. Sophomore Elias Tsouristakis of New Rochelle singled on a 2-2 pitch into left field with the bases loaded to drive home the game’s winning run.
