Senior forward Yancy Gates recorded his 20th career double-double, and sophomore guard Sean Kilpatrick of White Plains had another solid game but  it was not enough as the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team fell to third-ranked, visiting Syracuse 60-53 before a sold-out crowd of 13,176 on ESPN’s Big Monday.

The rugged Gates, a home-grown product, had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bearcats (15-6, 5-3 Big East).

Kilpatrick, who was graduated from Notre Dame Prep, was second-best with nine rebounds while scoring eight points and dishing out four assists.

Syracuse (21-1, 8-1 Big East) was held to nearly 19 points below its season average, but the Orange shot 46.4 percent from the field and got most of their points in the paint.

Cincinnati will travel to Piscataway, NJ, to take on Rutgers (11-9) on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 6 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Big East Network.

Pucci helps in shutout

Harvard University junior defenseman Josephine Pucci of Pearl River had her third goal of the season and led a strong Crimson defense that blanked Colgate, 4-0, at Bright Hockey Center in Cambridge, MA.

The shutout was Harvard’s second against Colgate (8-16-1, 3-10-1 ECAC) this season, as the Crimson won the first game in the series, 2-0.

Both teams took a pair of penalties down the stretch but Harvard added another goal before the buzzer as Pucci jostled the puck away from a Colgate skater and fed Lyndsey Fry of Chandler, AZ, who sped down the ice and into the Colgate zone. Fry got the puck back to Pucci on a well-timed pass and all Pucci had to do was redirect the puck into the open net to cap the 4-0 final.

Harvard (12-6-1, 9-4-1 ECAC) travels to New Haven, CT, on Friday (Jan. 27)  for a 7 p.m., showdown with Ivy rival Yale.  The Bulldogs are struggling at 1-19, with their only win a 3-2 overtime triumph against Union College.

Red Dragons seek turnaround

The women’s hockey team at SUNY Cortland hosts Chatham University of Pittsburgh, PA, for back-to-back games on Friday (Jan. 27) at 7 p.m., and Saturday (Jan. 28) at 2 p.m.

Cortland is struggling at 2-11-1, but Chatham is also struggling at 3-10-2.

Pam Murphy and Jessica Troilo, both of New Rochelle, are members of the Cortland team, along with junior forward Jordan Baum of Suffern. Murphy, a senior, plays at the forward and defense positions; Troilo is a forward.

Violets in full bloom

Max Wein of Purchase had six points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal as the once-beaten New York University men’s basketball team earned a huge University Athletic Association (UAA) victory and moved into a tie for first place in 89-75 fashion at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

The loss was the first in UAA play for Washington, which is 12-4 overall.

The Violets (14-1, 4-1) are tied with Washington and No. 8 Emory University (15-1), whose senior guard Alex Gulotta of Briarcliff Manor is averaging nine points and two rebounds per game. Gulotta also has 11 steals on the season.

NYU--which also beat the University of Chicago 81-71 on the Midwest trip--returns home Friday night (Jan. 27) for a UAA game against Carnegie Mellon University (6-10, 1-4) at 8 p.m.

Dolphins look to stop slide

The College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s basketball team hosts Yeshiva University (1-7) tonight hopeful of snapping a three-game losing streak.

Tip-off time at the Sharp Center in Riverdale is set at 8:30 p.m.

The Dolphins (4-11) are coming off a 75-51 loss to visiting Rowan University (7-11) of Glassboro, NJ.

Senior Kara McNish of Hawthorne, NJ, matched her career-high with 19 points and recorded her fourth straight double-double with 17 rebounds in the loss.

Senior forward Brittany Griffin of Suffern, who starred at Albertus Magnus, had just five points but pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Dolphins.

Huskies, Drinks speed ahead

Junior sprinter Jesse Drinks of Ossining and the University of Connecticut track and field teams will compete at the Boston Indoor Games on Saturday (Jan. 27).

Drinks turned in a second-place effort in the 55-meter dash in 6.42 at the Winter Invitational. The Huskies followed up by winning the Great Dane Classic at the New Balance Track and Field Center in upper Manhattan, scoring 123 points to outdistance runner-up Maryland-Eastern Shore, which had 76.
