Anyone who watched a Major League Baseball game yesterday may have realized something a little off with the player’s equipment. Rather then using the traditional brown or black Louisville Slugger baseball bats players across the country stood in the batter’s box with a piece of pink lumber.

The bats are part of the MLB’s tradition to raise awareness for breast cancer and to raise funds to someday find a cure. The players started using pink bats in 2006 and yesterday players and other on field personnel wore pink ribbons and wristbands during games. 

After players get a chance to sign their game used bats they will be put on MLB.com and auctioned off with proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

College Sports Notebook:

Spartans hope to be at home in Kentucky

The St. Thomas Aquinas golf team, fresh off a fifth-place finish in the Atlantic/East NCAA Super Regionals, will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship on Tuesday when the first round is held at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, KY.

 The Spartans, advancing to the national championship for a fourth consecutive season, shot a team score of 318 to advance.

Mike Gunderson of Duxbury, MA, posted a team low 74, which placed the senior eighth overall.

Thomas Linehan of Dansville shot his highest round on the final day, carding an 80, but still tied for 6th overall.  Linehan, a sophomore, shot 74, 76 in his first two rounds and was among the top four individuals for most of the tournament.  

Seniors John Casey and Nick Delango, both of Garnerville, closed out the Spartans’ scorers with rounds of 82. Gunderson started out strong finishing the front nine 1-over and was able to get back to even with five holes to go.  

Mortarboard musings

• Standout junior JoJo Marasco of Yorktown Heights was held without a point for the first time in 25 games as No. 3 Duke (14-4) defeated No. 16 Syracuse, 12-9, in the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, NC. The Orange, who received two goals apiece from senior Kevin Drew of Katonah and sophomore Scott Loy of Toledo, OH, finished the season with a 9-8 overall record. Marasco, an alum of Somers HS, ranked fourth in scoring on the team with 31 points on 12 goals and 19 assists.
• Senior defenseman Kevin Gordon of Rye, a team captain, was in action as Colgate University (14-3), seeded ninth, upended top-rated, previously unbeaten UMass, 13-11, in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament at Garber Field in Amherst, MA. The Raiders, who overcame a five-goal deficit, stopped a 15-game winning streak for UMass, and marks the first time in program history that they advance to the second round where they will face Duke.
• Junior defenseman Kiernan McDonald of Rye was on the losing end as the University of Denver, a 2011 NCAA Tournament semifinalist, defeated North Carolina, 16-14, at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NH. The Pioneers improved to 9-6 on the season while the Tar Heels' season ends at 11-6.

Last week’s Daily Sports Digest poll revolved around the Yankees and the injury to future hall of famer Mariano Rivera. The question asks 50% of the people polled voted that the Yankees would still win the World Series without Rivera closing out games.

This week the Daily Sports Digest poll looks at a controversial decision made by a Phoenix based high school to not allow their baseball team to play against another squad because the starting second basemen is female.
