Nanuet And Nyack Play A Tough Match In Muddy Conditions

Nanuet boys soccer went to Nyack to play a league match on a sloppy field on Tuesday.

The Nanuet Golden Knights and the Nyack Indians played a match in sloppy conditions on Tuesday, Oct. 5. The game started at an average pace due to the muddy field but by the end of the first half the action had picked up.

Nyack controlled the ball for the majority of the game. Nanuet's attacks came mainly on counter attacks and set pieces.  The game remained close for the first half. Nyack secured an early 1 – 0 lead when Captain Sam Cohen scored but were unable to capitalize on a few late chances in the first half.

Nyack was pushing hard for another goal. That actually led to a few chances for Nanuet as the Golden Knights were able to complete a few long passes that led to breaks, but they were unable to finish.

Nyack pulled away in the second half building up to a 4 – 0 lead. The game seemed as if it would over for sure until late in the second half when Nanuet struck. They were awarded a penalty kick and Thomas Murtagh put it past the Nyack keeper to get Nanuet on the board.

Just four minutes later Murtagh struck again. He put a free kick from over 30 yards out low and hard toward the back post and was rewarded with his second goal.

Nanuet tried to get the game going quickly but things got a little dicey at that point.  A bit of pushing and shoving led to a delay as the referees sorted things out. No cards were issued.

Nyack was able to get a 5th and final goal with only a few minutes left which set the final score at 5 – 2.

"We have some sophomores that are trying to keep up here [on the varsity squad]" said Nanuet Head Coach Peter Patrikis. "I hope the experience is helping them out." Nanuet has been through a rough season, but with plenty of young talent they do something to look forward to.

"This is a tough league so every game is a challenge. We are looking forward to our next match against Albertus. We just played them in a tough 1 -  0 loss, but I think we played just as good as they did," said Nyack Head Coach Hal Stone. Nyack looked like a strong side on Tuesday and has high hopes for the rest of their season.
