Nanuet Defeats Clarkstown North in Field Hockey

The Nanuet Golden Knights won by a score of 1-0 against the Clarkstown North Rams at Nanuet on Friday afternoon.

The Nanuet Knights improved their record to 3-2 shutting out the Clarkstown North Rams by a score of 1-0.

The only goal came with 10:25 left in the first half. Senior tri-captain Nikki Vormittag scored the unassisted goal that put the Knights ahead for good.

"I was hungry to get my first goal this season," said Vormittag. "It was a shot from the top of the circle, on the right."

Nicole Cember made eight nice saves as goalie for the Rams.

"I thought the one that got in was going to be a corner," said Cember. "There was a pause and then a frenzy. The ball got passed to the side and made it in." Cember explained that she went to camp over the summer to improve her skills. She worked hard at intercepting passes, stacking, and slide tackling. The Knights' goalie senior tri-captain Stephanie Levy made three saves to earn her first shut out of the season.

"It's really fun to be the goalie," said Levy. "If ones goes in, I have to put it behind me. Our defense helped out a lot today." After the game, Nanuet head coach Karen Leitner credited the team's success to a great team chemistry.

"The seniors stepped up," said Leitner. "The team gives 150 percent from whistle to whistle. I can't ask for more. From a year ago, our transition game has improved. Everyone understands their role. Sydney Arena (a senior tri-captain) leads our defense. Katie Fitzgerald has been our dominant scorer. We're learning how to win."

Clarkstown North's co-captain Ashley Regan (along with Cember) said, "We're doing much better this year. We're working more on offense and placement. We tied South 1-1 and we play Pearl River tomorrow." As captains, Cember and Regan run captains' practices and lead stretching and warm-ups. They are looking forward to their next pasta party when they will make pink shirts to wear for breast cancer awareness in October.

"Nanuet is a good driving team," said North's coach Jane Schlappich commented. "To be successful we need to keep the ball on offense and we need quicker feet. We made those adjustments at half-time and had the ball more in the second half."
