Nanuet Hosts Pearl River Lacrosse, Pirates Leave with 2 Wins

13-6 for the girls and 10-3 for the guys. Nanuet Goalkeeper Allison Pedro set a school record with 29 saves

Nanuet hosted Pearl River’s boys and girls lacrosse teams on Saturday morning as part of the . Pearl River won both matches by 7, 13-6 for the girls and 10-3 for the guys. The Pirates won the day, but it is a pair of goalkeepers who will be remembered.

In the girls’ match, Nanuet Goalkeeper Allison Pedro set a school record by making 29 saves on Saturday. The Lady Pirates got off 49 shots in the game, 13 found their way into the net and seven were off target but Pedro was able to stop the vast majority of them.

“I’ve never seen a goalie play like that before,” said Pearl River Coach Laurie Mayernik. “(Pedro) was unbelievable today. She really frustrated our girls in the first half. It felt like we had a big lead but we didn’t. (Pedro) really stood up to the challenge today, 29 saves is the most I’ve seen.”

The Nanuet keeper was pleased with her record setting performance but mainly just enjoys contributing to her team.

“It feels good to help out the team in any way I can and to know that I helped keep my team in the game,” said Pedro. “Pearl River is a really good team. I just did my best. As far as the record goes, it feels great to be remembered with some great goalies who have played here before.”

Nanuet gets another crack at Pearl River on Monday.

No records were set in the boys game, except maybe for pushing and shoving. The first half was heated as both teams had trouble finding the back of the net. Pearl River led 3-1 at the half.

In the second half Pearl River extended their lead to 8-2. The Pirate offense was having a rough go of it against the Golden Knights’ defense for a stretch and during that time it was Pirate keeper Lowell Hunt who kept his team ahead.

Hunt was just having one of those games where he saw everything coming at him before it got there.  Not only does Hunt lead the defense by shouting out Nanuet’s every movement but when his defense breaks down, he was willing to get himself in front of whatever the opposition throws at him. At the end of the game, Hunt had tallied 20 saves and only allowed 3 goals.

“This is just one game in a long season,” said Hunt.  “I try my best every game and I’ll try to come out next game and do even better. I was all over the ball today but it starts with defense. We played good defense, slid when we needed to and did a good job picking up our men. That’s how we need to play on the defensive end.”

Pearl River is moving on to the playoffs next week after finishing 2-2 in their league and 6-10 overall.

“Today we knew we had an advantage at the goalie position,” said Pearl River Coach Al Staker. “You never want to rely on that but Lowell is a great goalie. Playoffs start next week. They rank all the teams in the league and set up the games. We just go from there.”
