Nanuet Softball Returns Young, But Experienced Team

The Golden Knights season kicks off Tuesday at home

Nanuet High School softball Head Coach Tony Toronto has a young but experienced team heading into the season.

“We’re strong offensively and defensively,” he said. “We have six starters returning from last year and four girls on the team will be playing their fifth year of varsity ball because they started as middle schoolers.”

The one area Toronto said the team isn’t experienced in is pitching. They lost Katie Vellardito to graduation, and Toronto said she was the team’s main starter for the past three years.

The Golden Knights will look to senior Natasha Castello, who didn’t pitch much in past years, and sophomore Rebecca Ferro, who’s playing her first year on varsity, to lead the pitching staff.

“If we can throw it over the plate, we’ll catch the ball where ever it's hit,” Toronto said. “We have a really solid defense.”

Another pitcher Toronto will look to this year is Danielle DiModugno, who’s also the team’s starting catcher.

“She’s a great catcher, but also a really good pitcher,” he said. “I wish she could pitch it and then run to the plate to catch at the same time.”

Toronto said other returning starters this year include all-county junior center fielder Laura Marinello, junior second baseman Janine Mackey and junior outfielder Christina Maher. Freshman Alana Prosapio is expected to start at shortstop.

The team went 13-8 last year, tying Tappan Zee High School for second in the league. The Knights lost their opening round playoff game last year, 9-0, at Eastchester.

The season kicks off for the Knights Tuesday at home against Tuxedo.
