Nanuet's Tutein, Vellardito Nominated For Top Spring Athletes

Retired Nanuet football and wrestling coach Rich Conklin and former Nanuet AD Judy Slutsky are on the selection committee

 

North Rockland lacrosse player Tara Monaghan and Spring Valley sprinter Winslow Dorsainvil were named the spring sports Rockland County Senior Athletes-of-the-Season for 2012.

The Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame Committee, Rockland County Sports Coaches Association and Crown Trophy of Pearl River sponsor the awards, given three times a year for over 30 years, once each for the fall, winter and spring seasons.

The athletic directors at Rockland County's 11 high schools submit their outstanding senior male and female athletes for each season to the selection committee. All 66 nominees are invited to the annual awards breakfast Tuesday, June 5 at the Pearl River Elks Club. 

Lacrosse player Kiera McMullan and Tom Bonaro of the track and field team were nominated as Pearl River's top female and male athletes of the spring sports season.

McMullan, who will play her college lacrosse at Notre Dame, led Pearl River to an upset of top-seeded Nyack to earn a return trip to the Section 1 Class A semifinals.

Bonaro played a key role as Pearl River won the Rockland County and Section 1 Class B championships. In the section meet, he took second place in the 400, third in the 800, fourth in the 200 and took part in the Pearl River team that won the 4X400 relay. Bonaro won titles in the 800 and 4X800 relay at the county meet.

Dorsainvil is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in the 100-meter dash, ninth nationally. He won the 100 meters in the county and section championship meets. He and Bonaro were both scheduled to compete in the Section 1 state qualifying meet today and Friday at White Plains High School.

Monahan’s' North Rockland team is undefeated and won the first Section 1 Class A championship in school history. She has 77 goals so far this season. 

They were chosen by a selection committee made up of retired Suffern AD Bob Buono, retired Albertus Magnus and Pearl River AD Tom Collins, retired Nanuet football and wrestling coach Rich Conklin, retired Pearl River AD Tom Doherty, Commissioner of Rockland County Officials Jimmy Kane and former Nanuet AD Judy Slutsky.

The nominees broken down by school are:

  • Albertus Magnus: Casey Kern (baseball) and Casey Silvestri (lacrosse)
  • Clarkstown North: Vincent Barbetto (lacrosse) and Shannon Kay (track and field)
  • Clarkstown South: Kristian Alleyne (lacrosse) and Samantha McDonald (softball)
  • Nanuet: Robert Tutein (track and field) and Katie Vellardito (softball)
  • North Rockland: Joe Dugan (lacrosse) and Tara Monaghan (lacrosse)
  • Nyack: Julio Melendez (track and field) and Cristina DeVita (lacrosse)
  • Pearl River: Tom Bonaro (track and field) and Kiera McMullan (lacrosse)
  • Ramapo: Jah-Moul Gordon (track and field) and Phillippa Bogard (track and field)
  • Spring Valley: Winslow Dorsainvil (track and field) and Tatiana Beaujour (softball)
  • Suffern: Kevin McNally (lacrosse) and Lely DeSimone (lacrosse)
  • Tappan Zee: Matthew DiGiacomo (track and field) and Kasey Keane (track and field)

In the fall, cross country runners Kieran Brennan and Molly Shine were Pearl River's nominees. In the winter, basketball players Joey Clinton and Christa Scognamiglio represented the Pirates and Scognamiglio earned the Rockland County honor for female athletes
