Pearl River Softball Starts Fast, Beats Albertus

Pearl River jumped out to a eight-run lead on the way to an 8-2 victory at Albertus Magnus Thursday.

Nicole Leote hit an inside-the-park, three-run home run in the top of the first to spark Pearl River to an 8-2 victory at Albertus Magnus Thursday.

Leote's hit rolled deep to the left field corner and the Albertus Magnus players thought it was a ground-rule double, but Leote continued to run home.

Pearl River sophomore shortstop Sam Alicandri, who led the game off a double and scored on Leote's home run, went 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and an RBI. Starting pitcher Mandy McCarthy singled and drove in two runs and right fielder Shannon McKiernan singled twice.

In the third inning, sophomore catcher Deirdre O'Malley hit a hard grounder that went through the shortstop and rolled past the Falcons' outfielders, allowing her to score on a four-base error.

McCarthy struck out six, gave up one hit and walked two in five shutout innings for her fourth victory of the season.

Brianna Martinez and Christine Kennedy scored the Falcons' two runs in the seventh inning, driven in by Bridget Gallione and Sara Chivey.

Pearl River improved to 7-0 on the season, dropping Albertus Magnus to 2-4.
