Thousands of Participants at Nanuet Relays

Kicking off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, teams from schools all around the county and beyond got together for a massive amount of races and events.

Saturday's conditions were perfect for the 44th Annual Nanuet Relay races. For the first time in a few weeks it was a warm sunny spring afternoon. With roughly 2,600 participants in the days races, at least that amount came out to support the athletes.

Fans were sprawled out all over the hills with everything from blankets to tents. The bleachers were packed up with people waiting to race or after their races were done, alongside parents and peers.

“My daughter is running for Clarkstown South and my husband coaches for Nanuet. It’s such a beautiful day. The crowd is great. They’ve been doing these relay races since I was in high school!” said Janet Baron of New City.

Alumni from years past came back for this important race. There was an alumni race that is one the most anticipated events of the day. Many different years of alumni showed up today, including a member of Nanuet high school class of 1985.

“This is our fourth year participating in these relays," said Ron Intrini, coach at Valley Central. "This is a very well organized meet. The kids are having fun and there is excellent completion. It’s a beautiful day."

“I’m running a 4x4. I’m never excited for a 4x4! It’s a lot of work!” said Troi Melton, senior from Cardinal Spellman in the Bronx. “Our whole track team is here. We're all very supportive of each other.”

It was a long day, as the final race finished after 4 p.m., but everyone was excited to find out who won.

So many cheers and screams echoed from the stands during the races. The student athletes had such enthusiasm and deditcation to their teams.

“I just ran the 4x4. I was all the way in the back and I thought, my team needs me, so I ran! I came in second place!” said Richardson Pierre of Spring Valley.

"We can't keep enough food at the stand!" laughed Deb Klock of the Black and Gold Club. "This is such a great crowd. The weather brought in so many people. There's around 60 different teams!"

The Black and Gold Club are responsible for the event. Many volunteers worked at the concession stands and throughout different areas of the races.

"All the funds are to raise money for scholarships for the Nanuet Seniors. We're doing great today!" added Klock.
