Hi-Tor Tips For Pets on Hot Days

The National Weather Service issued a , which is in effect from noon today through 8 p.m. on Thursday. The air quality alert is in effect from 11 a.m. today to 11 p.m. tonight. High heat with heat index values of 100 to 104 degrees are expected this afternoon and evening and also Thursday afternoon and evening. 

Also,  are now open and available for residents to use as cooling centers during normal operating hours.

While people are trying to stay cool and hydrated, what about your pets? 

"The weather is predicted to be close to 100 degrees and very humid Wednesday and Thursday. Do not take your dog in the car unless they are going inside with you when you get (to your destination)," said Hi-Tor President Roberta Bangs. 

She cautioned to not leave pets, kids, elders or others who are sensitive to high temperatures in the car for "even for 5 minutes and with the windows open."

"Bring your outdoor pets indoors or into deep shade and make sure all pets have water available at all times. The afternoons are going to be too hot to take long walks and much too hot to run with your dog," added Bangs. "If your pets are home during the day, leave the AC on 78/80 so they will be comfortable. Don't shut it off while you are at work."
