Nanuet Escapes Major Storm Damage

Storm 'not nearly as bad as we thought,' emergency officials say

Despite dire weather forecasts and ominous cloud formations prior to Thursday night's thunderstorms, Nanuet and Rockland County avoided any major storm damage, officials said Friday.

Gordon Wren, director of Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services, said the squall did not live up to its forecast.

"It was not nearly as bad as we thought it would be," he said.

Wren said that a "long, narrow band of lighting, rain and wind" passed through the county for only about 10 or 15 minutes.

"[The storm] was pretty much uniform throughout the county," Wren added. "We had fire companies standing by—I guess you could say we were prepared."

Wren said reports of downed wires, trees on houses and fallen branches came in from around the area. About 50 customers in the New City area lost power Thursday evening but that was done to eight by early this morning. In Haverstraw and Stony Point, emergency officials dispatched rescue boats to help two vessels on the Hudson.

A tree on High Avenue in Nyack came down, tangling wires, but less then 10 homes in the area were without power as of 9 a.m. Friday, according to O&R. There were some reports of flooding but none as severe as from past storms.

"We had three trees that went down last night. Two small ones and one large one," said Wayne Ballard, Clarkstown Highway Superintendent. "In other places, like (Putnum and northern Westchester), they got it much worse. We got it easy."

Ballard said that one small tree was near the Mountainview Condominiums in Valley Cottage, another small one was off of New York Avenue in Valley Cottage and the large fallen tree was in Central Nyack on Broadway by the firehouse.
