Those familiar yellow buckets for the Highview Playground are popping up everywhere and this past Saturday, they were in front of Stop and Shop in Nanuet. Families volunteered for the Highview Playground Restoration by asking for donations in front of the supermarket from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“This is the first Saturday and we will be out here and will will continue as many Saturdays as we can," said Mike Bird, volunteer, member of the steering committe. "Stop and Shop has been kind to us, allowing us to be here.” He was there with his six-year-old son, Morgan.
“I miss the rope climbing thing,” said Morgan thinking back about the old "castle" park.
A table was set up, showing off Highview Playground T-Shirts for a donation of $10 and forms to purchase a Brick Paver in the playground. However, donations of any amount are accepted because no donation is too small.
“We've fundraised 20 percent of the budget for the playground so far, so every little bit counts," said Bird. "We are hoping to get grants from Corporations for the rest of the budget. We're grateful to Eliot Engel for expediting our 501c3 status from the IRS to establish ourselves as a non-profit, without this we would not be able to receive the grants we need.”
Laura Rusiecki donated on her way out of Stop and Shop.
“My kids always enjoyed the playground so now it is time for a new generation to enjoy it,” Rusiecki said.
“Before moving into my house a year ago, I was living in the Comfort Inn and with nothing to do I would take my son who was a kindergartener over to the Highview playground all the time. When I got the call that it was going to be demolished it was tragic. Then we had a meeting to create a board and here we are,” Bird added.
“Thank you very much for helping build the playground” is the response to each person who contributed to the restoration of the Highview Playground.
“We appreciate all the help from the community, they have been great,” Said Bird.
The intended construction day for the Highview playground is Columbus Day, October 10. Visit www.highviewplayground.com to donate online and view the Highview Playground Calendar of events.
