Hardworking Lions have some down time on Labor Day

The Nanuet Lions took some time to relax on Labor Day at Memorial Park in Nyack.

After two consecutive days of raising money in front of Petsmart for their local charities, the Nanuet Lions took a day off this Labor Day. The members gathered in the nice weather at Memorial Park in Nyack with KFC, chips, soda and music.

"We're just going to kick back and relax," President Barbara Chuck said. "If anyone  says the 'L' word, they have to donate a dollar to our charities." She explained that the 'L' word is 'Lion' because today is supposed to be just play and no work.

With work not being a topic of discussion, the members went back and forth between talking about the Polar Bear Plunge and the Mets as they swapped jokes and laughs.

Chuck added that meeting casually like this helps foster a better relationship when the members are volunteering for several hours together.

"We're friends first and this helps to get to know each other more for when you're out there raising money together," Chuck said.

Most weekends, the Lions are busy raising money for Haiti, food pantries, their eyeglasses program, fallen Rockland soldiers fund and many others. Next weekend, they're back to their busy selves:

  • Saturday, Sept 11 the Lions will be in Pearl River at the Central Avenue park across from the Pearl River Fire House. They'll be there from 10-4 accepting donations.
