Local Boy Prepares for St. Baldrick's Day

Jack McKee has raised $2,590 out of his $3,000 goal.

Pearl River’s Jack McKee, 11, is participating in St. Baldrick's Day, which is tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 11 at Dominican College.

“This year I am doing St.Baldricks by myself,” he said. “I have enjoyed doing this event for the past four years. It is fun getting my head shaved and showing that kids with cancer are no different.”

This is an event that raises funds for cancer research and support for kids with cancer.

“St.Baldricks day to me is a day about helping kids with cancer. Getting your head shaved for St.Baldricks makes you feel good about yourself,” he said. “There is no personal reason, but I like raising money for cures to cancer.”

Each participant raises funds to shave his/her hair in support of those kids with cancer who do not have a choice but to have their heads shaved and loss of hair from treatment.

“I am excited but calm,” said McKee. “I find this event so much fun.”

“We’re very proud of him; it was a 100 percent his idea to participate in this,” said McKee’s father Mike. “He gets very excited as it gets closer to March each year and his success at raising funds has really been remarkable. He’s got quite a nice list of achievements in the past three years and this year as well in raising money for it.”

“My family has supported me by giving me money to this foundation, including my dads work friends. My family says this is a great thing I am doing,” he said.

Here are some ways you can help:

  • You could join them on stage and have your head shaved to help show kids that not having hair is not a big deal (free lunch at Baileys after for shavees.)
  • You could come and help at the event, free t-shirt to volunteers and a lot of fun.
  • You could donate to them or anyone else at events all over the country (there are more than 1,000 events going on this year.)
