Nanuet Cub Scouts Launch Rockets [VIDEO]

The rockets launched up about 300-400 feet

It was a beautiful Sunday to be shooting rockets off in the fields behind Miller Elementary. It wasn't a bunch of teens up to no good. It was Nanuet Cub Scout Pack 233's long-running annual Rocket Launch. The boys made cardboard-tube rockets and shot them off, running in every which way to catch them as they fell.

The rockets are made with a motor, plastic or wooden fins, nose cone, cardboard tube and a recovery system (parachute or streamer). They reach about 300-400 feet.

Steve McChesney, father of two young boys ages seven and nine, calls himself the "Rocket Geek." Sponsored by the pack, he gets all the components for the rockets and guides the rocket launch day. He added that the oddest thing he's seen over the years at a rocket launch is that "sometimes, they just blow up on the (launch) pad."
