Nanuet Fire House Hosts Car Wash For Eagle Scout Project

Joseph Somma is looking to refurbish the Children's Garden at the Nanuet Public Library

Joseph Somma, his friends and family got together on Saturday to wash some cars.

The 16-year-old from Nanuet is currently working on his Eagle Scout project, in which he is redoing the Children’s Garden for the Nanuet Public Library. He’s in the fundraising stage, so he held a car wash at the Nanuet Fire House.

Somma and his team had multiple stations, where cars were soaped up, hosed down and dried off. They also sold hot dogs, popcorn and drinks to bring in some extra money as well.

The Nanuet High School student who has been in scouts for about eight years said for his project he’ll be making a new water garden, putting in a new water feature and bringing in a new bench, picnic table and umbrella.

“We expect to be finished before the summer so then over the summer the kids can go into the courtyard and really enjoy it,” he said.

He’s currently fundraising for the plants, water feature and the picnic table and umbrella. Somma has already started digging out the area for the water garden.

Somma reached out to people to help by starting a Facebook page.

“It’s really amazing how today you can reach out to people online like that and they’ll come out to help you with something,” he said.

He said to hold the event at the fire house, where his father is a volunteer firefighter, he wrote the department a letter explaining his project and what he wanted to do, and then just check with them for the dates.

He’s also holding car washes at the fire house the next two Saturdays, April 14 and 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Saturday. The car wash costs $5.
