Nanuet Lions: New Member, New Scholarship Names

The Nanuet Lions swore in a new member and announced their finalized scholarship names.

With the slew of charities the Nanuet Lions Club is involved in, they're always looking for more members and volunteers.

This past Wednesday, the club welcomed a new member. District Governor Michael Bryceland swore in Joanne Oldham during the Nanuet Lions Club's meeting.

"I joined because I know that they're a service organization," Oldham said. "I'd like to give back to the community."

Lion Patricia Hart placed a Lions Pin on Oldham's lapel and a second pin was a friendship one from Bryceland. Now the Nanuet Lions have about 45 members but are always looking for new ones to help with their multiple charities.

One of their charities is a scholarship fund. At the same meeting, the names of the three essay and volunteer scholarships were finalized:

  • Alex Gromack scholarship, named after Clarkstown's supervisor.
  • Paul Diamont scholarship, named after the previous Lions president.
  • and the third scholarship is named after the Lions club itself.

Each scholarship is $500. Two scholarships are for high school students and above while the third is for a junior high student. There are five essay categories:

  • Vision
  • Environment
  • Leadership
  • Substance Abuse
  • Literacy

The criteria for each scholarship is as follows:

High School and above Scholarship:

  • 500 word essay in one of the five categories listed above
  • 24 community service hours in the student's essay category.
  • The student's parents have to work or live in Nanuet or Clarkstown.
  • 9th grade to 21 years old.

Junior High School Scholarship:

  • 500 word essay in one of the five categories listed above
  • 24 community service hours in the student's essay category.
  • The student's parents have to work or live in Nanuet or Clarkstown.
  • 7th and 8th grade
