Nanuet Lions: Promotions and Service Awards

The Nanuet Lions are usually out and about every weekend raising money for their charities.

At the last meeting of the Nanuet Lions Club, there were a few great achievements.

They had collected 318 glasses from their donation boxes for their Eyes Wear Program in September and 540 pounds of food in July.

Lion Lou Ramos was promoted to the chair of literacy in braille. He now is in charge of proofreading the essays in braille for the Lion's scholarship program.

"I lived in Albany for a year adn I taught braille to a child," he said. He's also taught an 11-year-old boy from Rockland braille as well. Both children lost their sight and needed to make the transition with Ramos' help.

"I did what I could. I gave them the patience that they needed." Ramos added that children and young adults get frustrated with the transition. "I'm sure it must be hard. I myself dont' know because I was born (blind)."

Lion Brad O'Dell was also promoted to the Diabetes Chair in the district, so he's now in charge of the diabetes programs for the 35 clubs in the district.

A last achievement at this meeting was awarding Lion President Barbara Chuck with two pins, one of which has been overdue. The 5-member pin is for getting five members to join and stay for a year and a day. The 10-member pin is for, of course, getting 10 members to join and stay for a year and a day.

Her next pin she hopes to earn is the 20-member pin.

"Not many Lions get this one," Chuck said of the 20-member pin. Her personal goal is Jan. 15 for this elusive pin.
