No New Members, but Many New Accomplishments

Seven new Lions were to be sworn in at last night's Nanuet Lions Club meeting, but couldn't make it. However, many achievements were announced.

Although the seven new Lions set to be sworn in at last night's meeting could not make it, the Nanuet Lions Club had several positive announcements that summed up their recent charity efforts.

Lion Gerry Jamieson announced that their Eye Glasses Recycling Program collected 184 pairs in July and 177 in August making the year-to-date amount 361 glasses. The club has collected over 4,000 since it started this eyewear recycling program.

The club also has scholarships for its literacy program. Lion Christine Delillo heads the literacy program and announced that money for the first $500 scholarship has been raised and they're working on raising money for the second one.

"The goal, of course, is to have three scholarships," Delilo said. She added that the prize wheel made to help raise money will be introduced at the Nyack Street Fair October 10. The scholarships are open to all Clarkstown residents and employees entering high school or college. Who gets the scholarships is determined through essay submissions to be judged by a four-person panel. The essay question is set to be released the last week of September.

At the meeting, the motion was carried to donate $100.00 to "Keep Rockland Beautiful" organization. With this donation, the club's logo will be featured on the back of the shirts of "Keep Rockland Beautiful."

Lastly, 30 gift bags full of school supplies were given to Clarkstown families.

"We had a very successful Back-to-School drive," said Lion President Barbara Chuck.
