NY Sports Club visits Diabetes Awareness Group

New York Sports Club representative Tara Steger presented an awareness workshop about diabetes to the Nanuet Lions Club.

For their monthly Diamont Diabetes Awareness Group (DDAG) meeting this past Wednesday, the Nanuet Lions Club had Tara Steger, fitness service manager at the New York Sports Club, give a timely and vital presentation.

Steger's main purpose for the appearance was to educate and give awareness of the hazards and benefits involved with exercise to those that suffer from diabetes.

"As a diabetic working out, you must monitor your blood sugar closely because you are then using insulin faster than you are during the day," explained Steger.

Steger also gave a heads up to the audience explaining that exercise may result in the need of less insulin or no insulin at all for certain people afflicted with diabetes and thus, an exercise program provides a wealth of benefits.

Steger explained that at the New York Sports Club, located in Townshend Center Mall in West Nyack, they make time to take the medical history of their clientele and if diabetic, they recommend checking their sugar before, during and after exercise.

Exercise also helps with stress, anxiety and other medical ailments so Steger strongly urged the group to partake in this activity on a regular basis as the benefits can be remarkable. She explained that the club also offers Pilates, which is similar to Yoga and helps with stress immensely.

DDAG meets every last Wednesday of the month and all are welcome to attend.  The meetings take place at 10 Maple Avenue in New City, Clarkstown Town Hall 7pm.  You may call for details at 845-536-0928 and Barbara Chuck, president of the Lions Chapter in Nanuet will answer any questions you may have.

Chuck has made a plea for corporate sponsorship to maintain these free meetings for the public. She explains that anyone that knows somebody with diabetes or has diabetes should feel free to call her at any time for assistance.
