Salvation Army Honors Beckerle Lumber, Target, Spring Valley Rotary

The awards were given out during the annual breakfast

Wake up to coffee, eggs, bacon and a side of good will. The Salvation Army and the Rockland County Advisory Board sponsored the 6th annual Breakfast, which saluted the certain organizations with the Community Service Award: Beckerle Lumber, Target and Spring Valley Rotary club. The Rockland County's President's Challenge Cup was also awarded to the Spring Valley Rotary.

Larry Beckerle accepted the award on behalf of Beckerle Lumber yesterday morning.

"It feels great. I'm very proud. We started in 1940 and we've been successful in helping the community," he said. "I'm grateful for the recognition, but the Salvation Army and the Spring Valley Rotary do so much. It was my time in the Spring Valley Rotary that got me involved with the Salvation Army."

"We (Beckerle Lumber) are celebrating our 70th anniversary. We are just so proud to help our community," he said.

There was a brass ensemble from the Spring Valley Corps for the event and Major Asit George also inducted two new members into the Rockland County Advisory Board.

Edward J. Frank and Howard Golden are members and previous presidents of the Spring Valley Rotary.

"We decided last year to start (this challenge) … where we challenge all the rotaries in the county to raise the most money via bell ringing," said immediate Past Rotary President Frank. They raised about $1,500. The tall trophy sponsored by Beckerle Lumber had the Spring Valley Rotary engraved upon it. "The winner each year gets their name (added) on the trophy."

The Spring Valley Rotary were outside the Christmas Tree Shop in the Spring Valley Shopping Plaza ringing small bells with those familiar red Salvation Army buckets. They brought their grandchildren and sang carols.

"My technique is to bring my granddaughter," said Frank.

"We really appreciate it, but not about the award nor recognition, but the ability to help our community is really the reward," said Golden.

One young girl, Miss Heather Hamann from the Germonds Presbyterian Church sang a solo before the awards were presented. Captain Philip Lloyd of the Spring Valley Corps opened the breakfast and had some words of appreciation at the very end.

"We are presenting two local businesses with awards for their community support and excellent philanthropic activities," Lloyd said.

Target's award was for their support of the "Back-to-School" initiative because the salvation army was able to help over 100 children with back to school clothing and school supplies with Target's help.
