Salvation Army Kicks off the Holidays at the Palisades Center Mall

Salvation Army members volunteer their time to bring holiday spirit to others.

Salvation Army volunteer Jeff Schultz heralded the approach of the holiday season as he played a selection of Christmas carols on Tuesday afternoon at the Palisades Center Mall.

“The Salvation Army is a wonderful organization and they’re servicing a lot of people right now in Rockland County, so they’re looking to help … that’s why I’m out here playing my horn.” said Schultz. He has been a member of the Salvation Army for more than 40 years since participating in its music education program as a child.

Schultz, who is also a music teacher and director, feels that it is important to contribute to the organization that helped give him his start. “Right now I’m acting as volunteer supporting something that has supported me all my life.”

Founded in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth, the Salvation Army is a charitable organization that is perhaps most visible during the holiday season when volunteer bell ringers and musicians man red donation buckets. The proceeds fund a number of programs and initiatives meant to assist those most in need.
