Summer Teen Volunteer Opportunity at Nanuet Library

Contact Lauren Cully at (845) 623-428 ext. 131 for more information

Keep your teen busy with a good cause this summer. The Nanuet Library is looking for teen volunteers this summer to help with the Summer Reading Club.

"This is a new venture we are doing this year and it gives teens the opportunity to work directly with younger kids," said Children's Librarian Lauren Cully. "They will listening to the kids give oral book reports on the books they read over the six weeks in the program, rewarding them with stickers and prizes and giving them encouragement to keep reading all summer."

The summer reading club is the Nanuet Library's largest  program of the year. Over six weeks, kids will come in and talk about the books they are reading and keep track of them in a log. There are weekly prizes and the kids also participate in weekly raffles and guessing jar contests. They receive a certificate at the end of the summer if they read six or more books. The reading program runs from June 24 - Aug. 8.

"We also do a club for middle schoolers in which they earn 'book bucks' that they can trade in for great prizes," said Cully. "At the end of the summer we have a big show to reward the kids for their great work. We usually get around 400 kids signed up, so it would be great to have the teens help us out. It's a great way to give back to the library, especially since many of our Nanuet teens did the summer reading program themselves when they were younger. It's also a great way to earn community service hours and is great experience for those teens who are thinking about possibly working with kids as their future career (or thinking about working in libraries)."
