@Pat Richards, the main difference between wealthy liberals and non-libs is that non-libs want toRead More make lots of money while libs want to make money plus social engineer the society. Marx was also wealthy spoiled brat who decided he cared for masses. Yes, from his mansion in Europe he lead the bloodshed of millions.

Another blow to the communist common core
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Bobtwo April 23, 2014 at 01:35 am
It's about time. In my opinion the affirmative action ruling has destroyed the higher educationRead More system in this country, A college diploma is not worth the paper it's written on any longer. In the old days the cream was allowed to raise to the top as the saying goes and that way you insured that you had the best. That is what made this country and its educational system so good. Eventually the minorities would have been part of that cream and would become the best of the best.
Porter gladstone April 23, 2014 at 02:06 am
2 observations: race in my opinion is not a disadvantage. poverty is. and poverty affects people ofRead More all colors--so colleges can take into account challenges in life--but being the son of michael jordan shouldnt grant him an easier admissions process simply because of skin pigmentation. 2) people also need to understand that the system in place does in fact result in diversity that we should all want. New Yrk Times about a year ago ran an article on peter stuyvesant high school--an elite school in manhattan that changed it admission policy to strictly merit. the result was 1 black student 95% asian. 1% hispanic 3 % white. Im not really sure that is a desirable outcome either. going to college is not just about attending bio 101. its interacting with a diverse student body that can also be considered an education. Colleges should not in my opinion adopt a strict meritocratic admissions process--- hardship , poverty, challenges should be considered. I get why people dont want racial preferences-- but i also get why people may regret what they wished for.
dwayne roberson April 23, 2014 at 07:02 am
Affirmative Action was the Planners foolhardy attempt to fix racism with racism. It is indicative ofRead More a pay back attitude apparent in Holder and Obama. This does not advance the actual state of equality. It does perpetuate the bitterness that the race industry and Democrat party rely on for power. A return to colorblind meritocracy is all that can really be fair and equal.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Walter Hawkes April 23, 2014 at 06:39 am
Hate to say it... But there are people that are destined, by intelligence, motivation or lack of it,Read More to serve fries, stock shelves, pick up trash, pick fruit, all of those tasks that the "smart guys" that came up with "common core" , don't want to do.. I believe you should be motivated to teach a child all they can, and want to learn..... But that motivation needs to come from parents, not the government. No Child Left Behind is a stifling move that hamstrings our teachers, and holds back the smarter more motivated students. My kids get straight A's, they have good teachers, and parents who study with them, and motivate them by example and nuturing. There will always be a divide between the haves and have nots..... If everything is equal, nothing will get done..... All chiefs and no Indians, sorry, not Pc....All officers and no enlisted.
Donna Westbrook April 23, 2014 at 06:56 am
There are children, that simply will never get A's in anything. The standard set in college IRead More believe is that you must get a c in your major, they don't request that one become an honor student to succeed. The public school system is requiring of children to be smarter and better in grade school than in COLLEGE! This is asinine. On the other hand, I wouldn't wish the life of serving fries, or picking up trash on anyone, unless it was their choice, and I would try to encourage them to like something else, at the same time :) I say that as having been in similar work. I just started college 3 weeks ago. I am 59. having most of my life in food service, it can teach one a lot, but at the same time, really be a greasy yucky job.

The Core is developmentally inapproriate in the younger grades. It expects abstract thinking beforeRead More children reach the age where they are capable of it. It expects written paragraphs in math, in first grade. Stephen Colbert does a great piece on the common core teaching children important skills for the workplace - math, and passive-aggressive not writing. Then the core plateaus. It slows down particularly in STEM subjects. Right now, the students being "field tested" in the upper grades are forced to take the math standard for their GRADE - even if they took Algebra two years ago. Thats just stupid. If you are not testing what they are taught, why test? Also, how does ANY standardized testing help individual students and teachers? The test is given around now. Then it is field trips and movies and Shakespeare's birthday party the rest of the year, then the scores come out in the summer. The teachers will not have the same students the next year. The PARCC test does not even break the test down, so teachers can know that the students they had last year did badly, but they wont know on which sections or why. The kid does not have a 'diagnosis of deficiencies to be worked on" follow him (not that they ever did), so how does it help the kid? How do they work on areas they are shaky on, if they are n ot told anything other than "you failed" or "you are not proficient"

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. Netflix is weak but is a fine alternative to cable for now. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.
april ann April 22, 2014 at 01:30 pm
I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Must have been a flat chested female who complained.... remember folks, "Never look down onRead More anyone unless you have a good view of the cleavage"..... And where in hell did all these religious creeps come from? What's religion got to do with staring at her cleavage anyway?
Brian Kari April 23, 2014 at 12:27 am
can all the religious people go away? the story was about some girl at Disneyland, who apparently,Read More according to some older Disney employee found whatever she was wearing on top, inappropriate. unfortunately, Melissa, large chested women do have a tendency to slide out of some types of clothing, and you may not have even noticed. Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It's like, "what did YOU do to help these people?" Same as you - nothing.

Security is a deterrent not a preventative measure. There is no way to be secure from everyRead More possibility because it is impossible to even conceive of every possibility. Instead we try to secure against the threats we know of through experience and those we may anticipate through inference extrapolated from those experiences. The businesses are naturally and rightly profit driven and things that do not directly and or immediately hurt the bottom line do not get priority funding. Thieves too are profit driven though they are less regulated than business and in general face more personal risk than businesses typically do toward realizing their bottom line. Due to the actual few distinctions between the thief and business the thief must be the more resourceful of the two and thus more innovative. Security is always going to be a reactionary means of preventing theft. The proactive means to prevent theft are to accept there is no absolute security and otherwise either too expensive, too harsh, too time consuming or some combination of those. Considering how long humanity seems to have dealt with the issue, one might think we would have tried all of the available variables and figured it out sometime during the last 5000 years through trial and error. Oh wait, we have. Communities where the moral code is instilled in the population from cradle to grave coupled with punishment, justly applied, for infractions have almost zero crime and it costs them almost zero dollars. Face it folks, we're all hippy freaks living in/on a commune we call Earth. Continually spending good money over top of bad as our orthodox approach has required over the centuries has only produced more crime and or prisons. This implies more crime/prisons is the goal if you THINK.
