Update: Rockland Cancellations & Snow Problems

Snow Emergency declared in Orangetown.

Tuesday Update:

  • Clarkstown Parks Board & Recreation Commission—Pre School and Helping Hands have been cancelled at Street Community Center for Wednesday, November 2, 2011.

Monday Update:

  • Nanuet Hebrew Center—Due to the power outage there will be no Religious School Classes today, Nov 1. Hebrew school is cancelled. All Hebrew school-related activities are cancelled as well.

  • Beth Am Religious School is closed today, Sunday, October 30, due to the impact of inclement weather and due to poor driving conditions. Our Grade 6 Workshop will be rescheduled.
  • Nanuet Hebrew Center: There will be no Hebrew school on Sunday, October 30.
  • West Rock Indoor - Tennis for Life canceled

Snow's coming down quickly and sticking to everything here in Rockland County. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the lower Hudson Valley, including Rockland.

The Town of Orangetown has declared a Snow Emergency. Parking of any vehicle on a posted snow emergency route is restricted until the lifting of this emergency. Vehicles parked on a snow emergency route may be ticketed and towed. It is also requested that vehicle travel on any roadway in the Town of Orangetown be for emergencies only. The Snow Emergency went into effect just before 5:30 p.m. and remains until 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

Road Conditions:

  • The Palisades Interstate Parkway is very slippery, with multiple spin-outs. Avoid the PIP. 
  • Many spin outs on the Palisades Interstate Parkway
  • Trees down on Route 59 and Route 303
  • Convent Road closed at Grandview Ave in Nanuet
  • Slippery conditions throughout the county, especially Red Hill Road and South Mountain Road in New City, Christian Herald Road in Upper Nyack, Western Highway in Orangetown.
  • Many utility lines, tree limbs down.
  • Stuck vehicles
  • NYS Thruway southbound right and center lanes blocked by fallen trees between Exit 11 and exit 10.
  • Northbound Route 303 lanes blocked by fallen trees in Blauvelt.
  • Tree reported on top of power lines along Kings Highway near Route 59.

warned that there may be branches snapping. With the snow coming so unusually early, the trees still have leaves on them and will be weighed down by the accumulated snow.

Temperatures in the mid-30s, wind gusts up to 20 mph. There's heavy snowfall expected for tonight with 5-8 inches of snow accumulation. Widespread hazardous travel conditions will be the result, NOAA warns.

Jawonio has postponed its annual dinner dance to Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Country Club in New City. 

Cancellations

  • Nanuet Hebrew Center Religious School - Military Bridge scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29 has been canceled due to the inclement weather.
  • Coupe Dance – Canceled for today: Classes beginning at 2:30 and later; All classes canceled for today.
  • Temple Beth Jacob Religious School - Comedy Night is Cancelled due to the storm.
  • Piermont Library is closing at 2:30 p.m.
  • Sloatsburg Public Library is closing early
  • SUNY – Rockland Community College classes and activities canceled after 2 p.m.
  • Rockland Youth Dance Ensemble – Nutcracker Rehearsals canceled today only
  • West Nyack Free Library is closing today at 1:30 p.m.
  • Orangetown Parks and Recreation programs and canceled and fields are closed
  • Grace Community Baptist Church – night services are canceled today
  • Rockland Teachers Center storytelling is canceled

Snow Problems through the Police Scanner

  • Tree down on Lakewood Rd in Congers
  • Trees down on Little Tor Rd. in New City
  • Police are taking people home from their disabled/stuck vehicles
  • Couple large tree branches fell on
  • Trees have knocked down burning wires, which have landed on the roofs of houses
  • Reports of transformers exploding
  • Police advise residents to stay indoors and off the roads to avoid getting stuck
  • Joseph Lane, Bardonia is closed (5:05 p.m.) due to downed wires
  • Tree down on Route 303 by Rockland Nissan, Blauvelt blocking the entire lane
  • Tree down on a power line just south of 59 Kings Highway in Congers. That's a few blocks south of the Kings Highway and Congers/Lake Rd intersection. Police put up a barricade but people are still going around. Clarkstown PD is addressing that issue.
  • Tree fell on a mobile home in Pomona
  • Old Middletown Road in Nanuet – tree down across entire road
  • Fox Ln in West Nyack has a small fire from wires on a pole
  • 9W is closed in certain areas due to downed trees and wires
  • People are calling in concerned about elderly neighbors without power
  • Large tree branch down on Townline Rd
