Section of Nanuet Gas Station's Snow-Covered Awning Collapses

No one injured, no fuel spilled in collapse at Gulf station on Route 59 at Middletown Road.

A section of a snow-covered awning over a Nanuet gas station collapsed Wednesday night, dumping snow and pieces of sheet metal down on some of the station’s pumps.

No one was injured in the collapse and there was no fuel leak from the pumps that was directly under the section of the awning that fell at the Gulf station 1 E. Route 59, at the intersection with Middletown Road.

Nanuet Fire Chief A.J. Knapp said the awning collapsed shortly after 9 p.m. while the gas station and convenience store was open. After being checked by firefighters and Clarkstown fire inspectors, the gas station was closed — with yellow caution tape ringing the station’s gas islands.

This was the second snow-related collapse in Clarkstown on Wednesday. At around 7 a.m., the roof of the old Bardonia Men’s Club at the intersection of Bardonia Road and Renee Lane collapsed from the load of nice and ice on the roof.

The club was closed and is slated to be demolished to make way for a “pocket park” to be created by the Town of Clarkstown. No one was injured in the roof collapse.

Throughout Rockland County, volunteer firefighters were called to check several buildings where roofs were damaged by ice and snow.
