Meals On Wheels Reschedules Dog Walk Benefit

Wags for Wheels Dog Walk will Benefit Meals on Wheels of Rockland. Full information as well as online registration is available at www.mowrockland.org.

A rain storm in September unfortunately delayed the Meals on Wheels' First Wags for Wheels Dog Walk. Originally set for  Saturday, Sept. 8 at Blue Hill Plaza in Pearl River, the event is now on Nov. 4.

"We are going to try again," said Marie Porrovecchio, Fundraising Manager for Meals on Wheel. "We rescheduled the Wags for Wheels Dog Walk ... As you will recall we had to cancel the original date of Sept. 8 because of the forecast for severe thunderstorms."

Meals on Wheels Programs & Services of Rockland hopes to establish this as an annual event and the dog and family walk is giong to benefit the agency and also help establish a Pet Food Pantry where seniors who are unable to afford nutritious food for their animal companions will be able to obtain donated pet foods.

"We have reopened online registration and full information is available at www.mowrockland.org," said Porrovecchio.

Meals on Wheels of Rockland volunteers drop off meals to homebound senior citizens throughout the county, but recently, social workers have noticed that seniors were not eating some or all of their meals.

“We have situations where social workers will go to someone’s home and find out that some of the seniors were giving or sharing their meals with their pets because they can’t afford pet food,” said Stan Schwarz, a Meals on Wheelsvolunteer. “The thought came to us that if we were able to get donated pet food, we would be able to provide it to seniors who can’t afford to buy it on their own.”

Thus, the first Wags for Wheels Dog Walk was born.

“It is the first time that Meals on Wheels (MoW) is doing this type of event,” said Marie Porrovecchio, fundraising manager of MoW.”Part of it is to raise money and provide for the programs of MoW. But we also want to start a pet food pantry for seniors who have animals that they can’t afford to buy food for.”

The fundraiser will benefit all Rockland seniors in this situation, not just MoW seniors.

“It’s a fundraiser for the Pet Food Pantry but also programs and services of MoW,” said Schwarz, who co-chairs the event. “In additiom to the homebound meals everybody’s very familiar with, we also five senior centers that we operate around the county and we have the Bobbie Lewis Adult Day Care Center here in Nanuet that caters to the need of people who have Alzheimer’s and other disorders.”

Register to participate at the early registration fee of $25 until November 3. You may also register in person at the site on November 4 for $25. The walk begins at 10 a.m. with registration starting an hour before. Contests and demonstrations are at noon. There will be vendors and refreshments.

Major sponsors of the Wags for Wheels Dog Walk are , Valley Cottage Animal Hospital, Hudson Valley Magazine and the Catherine C. Reiley Charitable Foundation.

Anyone who wants more information about the event or would like to register to participate can do so at www.mowrockland.org

An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

UW is by far the cheapest utility we have delivering clean water to my family for over 35 years. IRead More can live without cable which costs $160 a month but not without water at about $50 a month. Thank you Mr. Pointing.

Mr. Pointing, I appreciate your clearing this matter up. Too often the Water Company s cast as theRead More Villian by the Press and it is best to nip it in the bud with true facts.

I see your point isnt so much about what they are spending it on, but the process that they followedRead More to get to this point, but are they getting generators for the street lights on main street or the traffic signals? Seems like a project that is way out of control, who has gone to these community centers during storms anyway. All I have ever read about was people charging cell phones at the community centers. Good Job Pat.
