CrossFit officially opens on Tuesday, April 30 but fitness enthusiasts can get a preview of the new facility this week. The CrossFit Nanuet facility, operated by Iron Fist Athletics (IFA) and Bardonia natives Saro and Naz Spenjian, supports the idea of overall fitness with workouts that boost athleticism by increasing endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. CrossFit incorporates gymnastics, weightlifting, Olympic lifts, powerlifting, climbing rope, jumping rope, many aspects of bodyweight exercises, sprinting, rowing, medicine balls, kettle balls, and stretching or mobilizing.
CrossFit at 149 Main Street, Unit G in Nanuet will be open to visitors beginning Tuesday, April 23 through Friday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday, April 27, visitors can stop by from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. They can check out the brand new 2,800-square-foot facility or box, as it is known as in the CrossFit world, look at the class schedule and meet the trainers.
The Spenjian brothers, who own the Nanuet CrossFit, are Bardonia residents. They bring more than 10 years of fitness expertise and are certified CrossFit trainers. Saro has an extensive background with certificates in Nutrition, Personal Training, CrossFit Olympic Lifting, CrossFit Strongman and will be the fulltime onsite trainer. Naz, who will lead classes part time, has professional experience as a law enforcement officer and in tactical training.
Visitors can try a free introductory class and take advantage of pre-opening pricing at a 15 percent discount. A one-month free membership will be given away in a raffle.
The Spenjians describe CrossFit as more than just a gym. CrossFit’s fitness regime includes Olympic lifting, gymnastics, weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, Kettlebells, rings, and climbing rope is a program that helps prepare athletes for any physical event. Members are physically and mentally challenged.
“Not doing the same fitness routine on a daily or weekly basis keeps members interested in coming back,” explained Naz. "It attracts people who aren't happy with the approach of globo gyms. It doesn't require a certain level of fitness, but if you're afraid of sweating, then CrossFit isn't for you. It only requires commitment. You have to come ready to push yourself every day and it is very addictive.”
CrossFit’s staff of expert trainers will lead members through lifting, sprinting and rowing exercises to achieve a healthier lifestyle. The communal aspect of CrossFit plays a large part in members getting through the Workout of the Day (WOD). CrossFitters compete against one another in 15 to 20 minute high circuit WODs for the best time or to pass personal records.
“The competitive atmosphere helps push members to give it their all,” said Saro. “Very often when members complete the WOD, you will see them motivating other members to finish. “CrossFit is about family, community and most of all energetic workouts.”
In addition to the Nanuet location, there are CrossFit facilities in Nyack and Chestnut Ridge.
