9/11 Memorial Service at RCC

Ramapo—Rockland Community College invites the public to join us in remembering those who perished during the terrorist attacks on this twelfth anniversary of 9/11.

9/11 Memorial Service
Wednesday, September 11, 2013
8:15 – 9:15 am
9/11 Memorial Garden (weather permitting)

The 9/11 Memorial Garden is a place of quiet reflection, dedicated to those who perished and to honor all who serve and keep our nation safe. The central design element is Eric David Laxman’s inspiring sculpture, Spirit Rising, which incorporates steel artifacts from the World Trade Center site. This year’s program includes a reading by Poet Laureate of Rockland County and RCC Poet-in-Residence, Professor Dan Masterson, who will read his lyrical and moving poem, Out of the Blue. A stone inscription of the poem will join Spirit Rising as a permanent installation in the Memorial Garden.

At the service, as we remember those who lost their lives, and the families and friends whose lives were forever altered by their loss, the names of the many victims with ties to Rockland County will be read by student veterans: Trish McEnery, USA; Charlie Rey, USAF; John A. Vitale, USMC; Jonathan Winfield, USMC.

Personal inscriptions are on many brick pavers scattered throughout the Memorial Garden and provide personal and moving testament as memorials and voicing hopeful prayers for peace. Members of the community can help students in first responder programs at RCC as we honor those whose lives were taken. Paver donations fund scholarships for students in: Emergency Medical Service, Fire Protection Technology, Emergency Management, and Criminal Justice. To have a paver inscribed with your personal message, please contact Don Cairns at the RCC Foundation, 845- 574-4576.
