Local Businesses Reflect on Nanuet Mall's Future

The businesses and their regulars mostly think that the mall is a good sign of things to come

, Clarkstown town Supervisor Alex Gromack announced that Simon Properties, owner of the Nanuet Mall, plans on demolishing and building a new mall after picking up the demolition permit applications.

He added that applications may be submitted in the next three to four weeks and the work is targeted for September. Gromack said the rebuilt Nanuet Mall would be a “traditional” mall with .

Here's what the surrounding businesses and their regulars have to say about the upcoming demolition and rebuilding of the Nanuet Mall:

"It’s a great for the area. It’ll bring in more people and help out the restaurants around here. It’s good for Nanuet and the community. The mall will bring in more jobs for people, like service and part-time jobs especially to help out lower-income families"

Peter Helou of Tiara Jewelers

"It’s a step in the right direction. It (the Nanuet Mall) cannot compete with the Palisades so it needs to give a different flavor (the high-end stores). You have to demolish before you can build. We’re hoping for more outdoor cafés and more community and family-friendly features. We need to inspire other companies to invest in this community.

Usama Mamari of Mamari Jewelers

"It’ll take a few years to demolish and rebuild so the construction workers will be good for the surrounding businesses, especially ones like mine. You have to look at the bright side of things. That mall is dead. You have to do something to help bring traffic back. It’s about time."

Tina Kang of Seafood and Wing City

"As long as they keep Banchetto Feast. I go there with my sons"

Joseph Gondek

"I’m all for it (a traditional mall). I’d like a movie theater. I’d rather go there than the Palisades (Center)"

Michael Tiepolt of Pearl River

"I think it may be  a good idea. There’s nothing going on there right now. I think it’ll be good for Nanuet"

Elenore of Supercuts

"It’s good. It’ll bring in more people"

Nanuet Barbershop

"It’ll draw more businesses. But they’ve got to do something"

G.F. of Cigar King

"I’m looking forward to seeing the plans and what’s going to happen over there"

I'd go there in a heartbeat over the Palisades mall. that place sucks and it's full of miscreants and gangs. Not to mention it's like a marketplace in Morocco. You can't walk five steps without someone shoving something in your face. It's worse than the Vegas strip!

I think we should get the Nanuet Mall going again. I and many others don't like the Palisades Mall. I would really like to see Ikea added to the Nanuet Mall that would bring a lot of people to shop there.

A NEW MALL SOUNDS GOOD BUT I THINK IT WILL HAVE A TOUGH TIME COMPETING WITH THE PALISADES MALL---I LIKE THE IDEA OF OUTLET STORES LIKE WOODBURY COMMON INCLUDING A NUMBER OF HIGH END SHOPS AND GREAT RESTAURANTS. WE HAVE ENOUGH MALLS IN WESTCHESTER AND NEW JERSEY BESIDES THE PALISADES. A GOOD OUTLET COMPLEX WOULD DRAW FROM THOSE AREAS AND BE MORE UNIQUE TO THE AREA THAN ANOTHER MALL

It would be great to bring life back to that location. I hope they will add another anchor store (too bad it couldn't be Boscov's again) to the new mall. The parking area behind Sears is in terrible condition. I agree that Banchetto Feast should be one of the restaurants included in the new Mall.

I think they should bring more Couture Stores as in Nordstorms, Juicy , Coach. Stuff as in woodbury commons and the westchester mall. I think there shouldn't be Holisters and other stores in the Palisades mall. If they do this both malls will still make money and have people, because there's different stores. They should put a better food court too. Maybe a couple of resturants one Movie theater! though there should be stores like woodbury commons! Woodbury commons will not go out of business the westchester mall has a lot of the same stores did they. I just think there should be the same stores except Macy's and Sears but Sears will never be at Palisades mall..... Please take this advice

How about an Ikea? It is something the Palisades Center does not have (and would certainly bring back business to the area)

An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

UW is by far the cheapest utility we have delivering clean water to my family for over 35 years. IRead More can live without cable which costs $160 a month but not without water at about $50 a month. Thank you Mr. Pointing.

Mr. Pointing, I appreciate your clearing this matter up. Too often the Water Company s cast as theRead More Villian by the Press and it is best to nip it in the bud with true facts.

I see your point isnt so much about what they are spending it on, but the process that they followedRead More to get to this point, but are they getting generators for the street lights on main street or the traffic signals? Seems like a project that is way out of control, who has gone to these community centers during storms anyway. All I have ever read about was people charging cell phones at the community centers. Good Job Pat.
