UPDATE: Nanuet Car Fire Closes Rt. 59 Westbound [VIDEO]

No injuries at the scene

A car fire late Tuesday afternoon briefly closed down a section of Route 59 in Nanuet.

Around 3:45 p.m. the westbound lane of Rt. 59 was closed for about 30 minutes in front of the salon in Nanuet right before College Ave.

The Nanuet Fire Department quickly extinguished the blaze.

Nanuet resident Sheila Morahan was at Wonder Nails when the flames broke out. She saw two men jump out of the white Nissan.

The Nanuet Fire Department said the fire was reported at 3:39 p.m., and that no one required medical attention.

"The vehicle just started smoking and caught on fire," officials said. "The doors welded themselves shut because of the heat so we had to break the windows open."

Another great job by our volunteers. Support your local fire department. http://www.nanuetfd.org/

Thankfully nobody was hurt. Must be a scary prospect for a firefighter to go up to one of those

oh you will be. at the cost of about $12mm of our taxes. they can alleviate the flooding on prospect for a lot less. when the new one is opened i hope to get a tour of it. from what i hear these firehouses have excellent bars in them. boys nite out!

Next time you need fire, police, or EMS don't bother call smitty since you got so much to say about it. Fire departments are 100% volunteer in this county and when you need them they come. So if you don't like the cost of paying for the service move out of rockland. Anyone who volunteers or works in the emergency services deserves the upper most respect because they save life's and property.

will its not the work done by them but the way dollars are being spent. an EMS tech that i know well told me about new equipment every year. we are nanuet, not nyfd. we don't have that many fires. ever see the firehouse in new city? go ask for a full tour
Will McAvoy August 29, 2012 at 04:55 PM
First off its not nyfd it's FDNY true Heros. And second it's not just fires they go to its many rescues and training they do yr after yr. there are many more important issues then how the costs your talking about. Take your liberal thinking somewhere else. Also get your facts straight.
Smitty Chesterfield August 29, 2012 at 06:22 PM
will, it is not HEROS, it is HEROES. sorry to offend you with lower case fdny but typing on a cell phone is a pain so i don't always focus on capitalization and punctuation. if i were a liberal i would probably be for tax and spend. but i am not. i like to conserve our tax dollars and first look at other options. you think every conservative is in favor of a new firehouse, huh. can you tell me what other options were looked at before the decision to spend $12mm or is floating another bond no biggie

Watchdog I agree with you on this. Our volunteer firefighters deserve our appreciation for the work they do and risks they take. Robin

12 million is nothing compared to other crap the county pays for in general and new projects.

12 million is nothing compared to other crap the county pays for in general and new projects. Robin this is a great way to show what our volunteers do.

will - thats your justification, huh. its a relatively small number compared to all else. its only 12 million. and its town money not county

Yes this is what we do and it is not comparable to a life, but these are the folks who out there lives, health, and families aside for 12-14 hrs a day.... anyone else out there work that hard and make a lil more than min wage??????
