5th Graders Come out for Barr's Family Fun Night

It was a chance for teachers to break the ice with students and parents

After two days of school, Barr held their annual Fifth Grade Family Fun Night, organized by Assistant Principal Ruben Addarich. On the menu was kickball, knockout basketball, volleyball and dinner. The students were grouped together and rotated between the activities.

“The volunteers are the sixth graders,” said RoseAnn Mercado of the Nanuet Family Resource Center, who provided the pizza, salad and refreshments for dinner. “They’re really excited (to volunteer) because they did it last year.”

Stephanie Braziller and Jenna Bloom were two sixth-grade volunteers. Both said they was volunteering for college.

“It’s fun because you get to see people do the same thing you did last year too,” added Bloom.

“This is a great chance for the students and parents to meet the fifth grade staff,” said Principal Roger Guccione. “It’s a great chance to see them (the teachers) in a different light, in a fun setting and to break the ice.”

Patch asked the new middle-schoolers how the first two days were going.

“You don’t have to be lead around by teachers,” said Tom Furey, when asked what was the difference between Barr and Highview Elementary. “In Highview, the hallways branch out and here it’s a continuous huge square.”

“I like gym and the lockers because now in gym you have to change and because we never had them (the lockers) before,” said Theresa Girvan.

“I like switching classes,” said Christopher Fisher. He added that he missed Highview. “Homework and the teachers were easier. Plus the locker is annoying.”

His friend Cameron Fassett also missed Highview.

“In Highview, we didn’t have to change classes so much,” he said.

“I miss the teachers (at Highview),” said Serena Graziano.

On the other hand, other students said those things were their favorite parts of Barr.

“I like the lockers and there’s a lot of different teachers,” said Carina Bucci.

Also the lunch room set up was another bonus at Barr.

“At Highview, you have to sit by class,” said Abigail Leeson-Feldman. “Here, there’s more freedom. At lunch you can sit with whoever you want.”
