The Nanuet Rotary awarded two scholarships to young role models

Two Nanuet High School graduates were awarded scholarships due to their community service.

Shefene Wright and Kerri Brezovsky were awarded scholarships thanks to the Nanuet Rotary. The two recipients were honored at the Clarksville Inn in West Nyack during a rotary luncheon.

The two girls received the scholarships based on their community service, teacher recommendations, transcripts and an essay.

“The thing we look for the most is what kind of service they’ve done,” said Scholarship Foundation chair Donna Lennane.

Kerri Brezovsky has volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society and local soup kitchens among many others. She was also a varsity cheerleader and captain of the girls softball team.

Brezovsky was awarded a $500 scholarship. She will attend RCC in the fall as an undecided major.

“She’s very honored that she received this and we are very proud of her,” said Father John Brezovsky.

Shefene Wright was awarded a $6,000 scholarship. Wright will attend Emory University in Georgia majoring in Biology.

“We are very proud of her,” said Wright’s uncle Thomas Pipala.

Wright is a honor student who has volunteered for such organizations as SADD, local soup kitchens, and People to People among many others.

“I’m very excited. When they called out my name I started to cry. I couldn’t believe I won,” said Wright.

For the Nanuet Rotary Wright and Brezovsky exemplify their motto "Service above Self."
