Daily Sports Digest: Local NFL Players To Appear In New Rochelle

Remember to send in your results and pictures to see them in the Daily Sports Digest

New Rochelle High School will retire former football standout Ray Rice’s No. 5 jersey Saturday just after he finishes up leading his Ray Rice Day clinic.

Ray Rice Day is an annual clinic for 500 kids ages 7-13 featuring games, autographs and more. Rice graduated New Rochelle in 2004 before heading to Rutgers University. After college, Rice was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2008 NFL Draft, and he’s since become one of the top running backs in the league.

Joining Rice at his annual camp will be other local NFL players, including Rice’s teammate at New Rochelle and Rutgers Courtney Greene, now a safety for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals running back Brian Leonard, Tennessee Titans cornerback Jason McCourty and New England Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty. All of them attended Rutgers, and the McCourty’s are twins from Nanuet, although they attended St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, NJ.

The Athletics were crowned the Nanuet Little League Baseball Majors champions on Wednesday June 13th.  They captured the title by winning the first two games of the three game series.  The A's finished their season and the playoffs with a nine game winning streak.

The team advances to play in the annual Tournament of Champions sponsored by the Journal News and hosted by the Haverstraw Little League.  Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday with the tournament going throughout the week.

Boulders Split Doubleheaders

The Boulders dropped the first game of their doubleheader Thursday against the New Jersey Jackals at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, NJ by a score of 2-1, but bounced back in the nightcap to win 3-0. In the Can-Am League, a doubleheader shortens both games to just seven innings.

In the first game, Rockland got on the board in the fourth, when Ryan Scoma hit a sac fly to center to score Qualon Millender.

In the win, Bobby Blevins pitched all seven innings, giving up four hits and striking out three. On offense, Landis Wilson belted a solo homer, Scoma drove in Millender with another sac fly and Keith Brachold scored on an error.
