Mortarboard musings

Jessica Biggs of Nanuet, an alumna of Paramus Catholic, is averaging seven points and four rebounds per game for the Mercy College women’s basketball team. The Mavericks hope to break a seven-game losing streak when they visit Bridgeport (1-7) on Saturday at 1 p.m. Mercy returns to Dobbs Ferry on Monday for a game against Felician (4-6) at 5:30 p.m.

Junior Amber Stephens of Stony Point, a North Rockland graduate, finished third in the triple jump with 35-feet 4-inches, and fourth in the long jump with an effort of 15-11 as the SUNY Cortland women’s track and field team captured the team title at the six-team St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays.

Clarkstown North graduate Paul Fields, a freshman, went 1-2 at 125 pounds as Cortland, ranked eighth nationally in Division III, finished first out of 12 schools at the two-day Messiah College Petrofes Invitational in Grantham, PA. The Red Dragons scored 165.5 points to win the tournament, which featured five ranked schools.

Joe Missale of Blauvelt, a Tappan Zee graduate, is a senior guard on the Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham men’s basketball team. The Devils won their final game before the break, holding off a furious rally by Mount St. Vincent to win 73-66 in Madison, NJ. The Devils return to action Dec. 29 in the Tampa Bay Shootout at the Tampa Prep School against Maryville beginning at 7 p.m.

Albertus Magnus alumna Felicia DaCruz, a freshman guard, is averaging two points, with six assists, in seven games for the Fairfield University women’s basketball team. The Stags (5-3) meet La Salle (3-7) on Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. in Philadelphia, PA.

Brittany Griffin of Suffern, an alumna of Albertus Magnus, finished in double-figures for the third straight game with 12 points to go along with six boards and a blocked shot, but the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s basketball team dropped a non-league tilt to cross-town rival Lehman, 81-58, in Riverdale. Three Dolphins scored in double-figures, with senior Ashley Ruiz of Carmel leading the way with 13 points. The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 2-4 heading into the semester break. The Dolphins, 2-4 into the break, travel to Hunter (3-6) on Dec. 29 at 6 p.m.

Sophomore Uditinder Thakur of Valley Cottage is 1-4 at 141 pounds for the No. 9 American University wrestling team, which picked up its first dual meet win of the season in Fairfax, Va., with a 27-15 victory over George Mason. The Eagles return to the mat for the 49th Midlands Championships, scheduled Dec. 29-30 on the campus of Northwestern in Evanston, IL.

Coming off the bench and playing eight minutes, freshman forward Rachel McNair of Valley Cottage had four rebounds as the George Mason University women’s basketball team fell to No. 5-ranked and undefeated Maryland, 78-50, at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. The Patriots (6-3) host George Washington University (5-4) on Thursday at 3 p.m. Maryland improved to 11-0.
