Lady Knights Fall to Pirates in Volleyball Rematch [VIDEO]

Nanuet and Pearl River split their two matches this season as Pearl River defeats Nanuet in their rematch this afternoon at Pearl River High School

The Lady Knights fell to the rival Pirates at Pearl River High School Monday  afternoon in a four-game match. In the between the teams this season, Nanuet defeated the Pirates in four games.

Monday's reflected the inconsistent play that Nanuet has struggled with this season. The Lady Knights opened the first game with intensity and took an early lead. But Pearl River eventually tied and overtook the Lady Knights, winning the game with a final score of 25-23.

In the second game, Nanuet again came out and scored early.  However, strong serving by Pearl River’s Annette Kryziewicz helped Pearl River overtake Nanuet yet again. Kryziewicz’s consistent service game and strong hitting contributed to her teams eventual win in the second game with a final score of 25-20.

“I think I did pretty well,” said Kryziewicz.  “It was definitely a game to be proud of.  We were definitely excited for this game and played really well.”

Pearl River Coach Julie Crowe also recognized Kryziewicz’s effort.

“She has really taken on a leadership role as a middle hitter," said Crowe. "She is a quiet player but even someone who is quiet and timid off the court can come out and get the kills and score the points.”

The third game of the match began with Nanuet again taking an early lead. Although Pearl River tied the score at 11 and the game remained close throughout, Nanuet ultimately squeezed out their first and only victory of the day with a final score of 26-24.  Aggressive hitting by Nanuet’s Nia Diaz and Caitlin Lenihan and a strong defensive effort by Sarah Zazyczny contributed to Nanuet’s win.

In the final game of the match, Nanuet scored the first six points of the game, led by Caitlin Dowling’s strong service game.  Like the first two games of the match, Pearl River slowly overtook the Lady Knights.  The Pirates tied the game at 15 and refused to give up the lead, winning the fourth and final game of the match with a final score of 25–18.

Crowe was pleased with her team’s performance against Nanuet.

“I knew they could do it," she said. "I knew they could come back on their home court and show what they could do.”

This was likely Nanuet’s last match of the year and the senior captains of the team, Victoria Serra and Ashley Toussaint, reflected on their season.

“We had confidence issues this year,” said Serra. “Next year the girls will come back with more confidence. I’m going to miss everyone so much.”

Toussaint had some advice for next year’s team.

“Don’t let negativity take you down," she said. "Always know you can do better than what you did before.”

Nanuet Coach Jennifer Adams is also looking ahead to next year.

“I’m just looking for consistency and intensity," said Adams. "I hope we come back next year with more intensity and a desire to win.”
