Nanuet Knights Fall to Husky Boys in Playoff Opener

Harrison defeated the Nanuet Golden Knights 51-40 in the opening round of the Section I playoffs Thursday evening at Harrison High School.

Harrison senior Brendan O’Shea's seven fourth-quarter points led the Harrison Huskies to a hard-fought 51 – 40 victory over visiting Nanuet Thursday evening, keeping the Huskies alive in the Section I playoffs and ending the Golden Knights' season.

Harrison (9-10) jumped out to an early lead, but the score was close throughout the first three quarters. Nanuet rallied in the second quarter, tying the game at halftime. The Huskies built a three-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but weren't able to pull away until the game's final minutes.

But by the final quarter the Huskies had worn down a less deep Nanuet team. Harrison co-captains O’Shea and point guard Michael Chiarella led the offense by running on the Golden Knights from the tip-off, and the game turned around as Nanuet began to show signs of fatigue.

“We pretty much ran out of gas,” said Nanuet Head Coach Jason Whalen. “They ran some good sets and they were a lot more aggressive than we were in the fourth quarter — it ended up hurting us in the end.”

The Husky defense and interior play also improved late in the game. Nanuet was able to get second and third opportunities early thanks to dominant offensive rebounding, but the interior advantage was almost non-existent late in the game.

“In the third quarter we scored a lot of points,” said Michael Chiarella, who scored 10 for the Huskies. “In the fourth quarter we cracked down on defense, we only gave up five points and we were able to get a lot of easy shots and layups.”

The loss ends Nanuet's season at 4-15.

“I feel disappointed, it’s a shame,” said Whalen. “I felt that we had a good game plan coming in we didn’t execute. We have to tip our hat to Harrison, they came out and they pulled it out in the end and that’s been the story of our season."

O’Shea led all scorers with 19 while Michael Jacobson added 9. Tuere Jackson scored 13 points to lead Nanuet, John Brezovky finished with 11.

Harrison will advance to take on sixth seeded Eastchester (14-4) on the road Friday night at 7 p.m. The game will be a rematch of the Ardsley Tournament championship game, in which .
