Nanuet Volleyball Triumphs Over Pearl River

The Lady Knights' high energy and good communication leads them to victory over rival Lady Pirates this afternoon

Nanuet’s Lady Knights defeated Pearl River’s Lady Pirates this afternoon at Nanuet in a 4-game match.  Although the teams appeared evenly matched, the Lady Knights’ energy and communication on the court brought them the win.

During the first game, the score remained close as the teams fought point for point.  The aggressiveness of Nanuet’s hitters made the difference in the end, particularly Juniors Dana Colavito, Caitlin Lenihan and Freshman Nia Diaz.  Their aggressiveness at the net gave Nanuet the victory with a final score of 25 to 19.

Nanuet’s scrappy defense during the second game of the match answered strong hitting by Pearl River's players, including Sophomore Kayla Clohessy.  Nanuet won that game with a score of 25 to 22.

“It was tough,” said Clohessy.  “The first game we went out and lost.  We needed to come together as a team.”

Pearl River rebounded in the third game of the match.  Pearl River's victory was due in part to strong serving by middle hitter Annette Krysiewicz.  Krysiewicz's strong service game gave her team an early lead of 11 to 3.  Pearl River went on to win the third game with a final score of 25 to 10.

Ultimately the momentum swung back in Nanuet’s favor in the fourth and final game of the match.  This time Nanuet took the early lead with strong serving by Caitlin Lenihan.  The game featured long rallies with more aggressive offensive play by Nanuet's hitters fed by Junior Setter, Caitlin Dowling.

Although Nanuet’s victory was truly a team effort, Dowling contributed to her team’s victory throughout the match as both setter and outside hitter.

“We changed it up today,” said Dowling.  “I was hitting outside.  I love it.  I always hit when I get the chance.  It felt amazing.  I felt really pumped up.”

"The third game was disappointing but I knew we would bring it back—we were psyched."

After the match, Pearl River Coach Jennifer Adams attributed the victory to her team’s determination to win.

“They had a rough day on Tuesday so they talked themselves up,” said Adams.  “The teams were probably evenly matched today.”

Pearl River Coach Julie Crowe, in her second year as head coach of the Lady Pirates, expressed disappointment in her team’s performance.

“We were just off today.  A few really tried but their heads just weren’t in it,” she said, “and Nanuet is always a scrappy team.”

Nanuet’s victory this afternoon is their third of the season, having defeated both East Ramapo and Nyack in previous matches.  Nanuet squares off again against Nyack in their next match on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Nanuet High School.
