MLK Day of Service: Volunteers Help Assess Spring Valley Community Health

Thanks to everyone who helped make our Second Annual (2014) MLK Day of Service project a success!

On Saturday January 18, Worldwide Community First Responder (WCFR) participated in the 2014 MLK Day of Service by assessing the health of the Spring Valley community. Over 15 individuals volunteered at our 2014 MLK Day of Service project "Assessing Spring Valley Community Health" for over 45 hours of service, and 80 individuals participated by completing our surveys. The purpose of this project was to get opinions about community health problems in the Spring Valley community. WCFR will use the results of the surveys and other information to identify the most pressing problems which can be addressed through community action.

We thank The Volunteer Center of United Way for collaborating with us. Our Volunteer Center captain, Natalia Diaz, was on site with us and managed the volunteers at the Louis Kurtz Civic Center .

The volunteers conducted short surveys of people along Main Street in Spring Valley. The 10 minute survey includes questions on demographics and community health. WCFR will organize a health fair in the Spring. Data collected from our MLK Day of Service project “Assessing Spring Valley’s Community Health” surveys will be used to focus on certain health topics.

We are very appreciative and thankful for our MLK Day of Service project volunteers. All of our volunteers received a MLK Day of Service T-Shirt and a gift card from Tony Roma's. Two volunteers, from Spring Valley High School, won prizes for collecting the most community health assessment surveys on that cold and snowy winter day. Our MLK Day of Service prize winners were:

• 2nd Prize Winner - Marie Tezy

Gift certificates for our prizes were donated by local businesses: Tony Roma's, West Nyack, NY; Stir Crazy, West Nyack, NY; and TGI's Friday, West Nyack, NY. Worldwide Community First Responder (WCFR) is a non-profit/charitable organization with a mission “to prevent deaths worldwide through education and training”. WCFR offers two main services: WCFR Health Education and WCFR Training Program.
