Yoga For American Cancer Society

It's from 9-11 a.m. on Sunday July 10, Yoga at Congers Memorial Park

This Sunday morning, yoga will be done all in the name of Charity.

”I have had yoga events in the past for animal rescue, Hi-Tor animal shelter and the BP oil spill. This is going to be my sixth yoga event for charity,” said Ashley DiMeglio, the force behing Yoga in Conger's Memorial Park.

100 percent of the proceeds go to the American Cancer society. DiMeglio corresponds with Marie from Suffern headcourters for American Cancer Society while creating this event.

“This is one of the biggest ones, benefiting so many people and also honoring my grandmother” added DiMeglio, who is a full time yoga, pilates instructor and personal trainer. “My grandmother who was an extremely big part of my life died from an extremely rare cancer, and when thinking about how I can help people, how I can do something outside to benefit everyone, I thought this would be the best way.”

The event is open to all levels of yoga students.

"There will be modifications and assistants who are certified yoga instructors walking around offering help to anyone that needs it” said DiMeglio.

Here's some basic info:

  • Meet on the grass in front of the lake at Congers Memorial Park, 6 Gilchrest Rd, Congers
  • Class starts at 9 a.m.
  • Bring a yoga mat, or towel if you do not have a yoga mat
  • The donation is $15
  • Pepsico donated water
  • Fruit and small snacks will be provided.
  • 90-minute class of which the last 30 minutes will be entertainment by an ATS belly dancer.
  • Live bongo player will be performing throughout the whole class” said DiMeglio

The class will be split up between three instructors:

  • Beatrice Mattaway
  • Scott Levesten
  • Kami Hackett and DiMeglio
  • Assistants Laurene Marrano and Joan Tseng will also be on hand.

”The great thing about yoga is that it opens you up to not only the exercise but also a sense of awareness” said DiMeglio. “For cancer survivers, it is not just a great workout and exercise but for them it is more of a mental thing. It gets them away from their illness, allowing them to escape for a little while and feel good. They also feel emotionally better after and it makes them realize that there is more out there; they don’t have to let cancer stop them. They can fight.”

“When I first started I was working with this one lady with cancer who made it a point to come to every single class no matter how she felt that day. Once all the classes were over she felt, 'I am going to be ok, I am going to be fine.' This made me focus more on using yoga to help people affected by cancer” recalled DiMeglio.

“I think yoga is the best thing you can do for your mind, body and spirit and it always lifts you up” said DiMeglio.
